Belvidere Family Centre

The Belvidere Family Centre is a large, state of the art, ecologically friendly, listed 140-year old building located in the Toxteth area of Liverpool.  This former Victorian convent was renovated into a £3.6m homeless centre by Liverpool Mutual Homes and Liverpool City Council in 2012.

The Centre provides self-contained apartments with private bathrooms and kitchens for 16 homeless families and a wide range of communal facilities (including laundry and communal meeting rooms) to help them rebuild their lives.  There is a large garden at the rear of the building and a play area for young children.   It is close to amenities such as bus routes, schools and supermarkets.

This emergency accommodation is made available for a temporary period only, following assessment by Liverpool City Council’s Housing Options Service.

The Centre is managed jointly by SHAP and the Whitechapel Centre – with staff from both organisations delivering accommodation-based housing-related support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  The staff team comprises of a Manager and nine Project Workers.

You will be allocated a named key-worker who will be responsible for helping you find permanent accommodation, register on Property Pool and ensuring you are able to claim and maintain any benefits that you are entitled to.  You do not need to be on benefits to be referred to the service.

Whilst residing at Belvidere Family Centre we can support you to:

  • identify any barriers to may have being rehoused such as  rent arrears, anti-social behaviour, etc
  • develop independent living skills
  • explore the full range of appropriate and realistic housing options that are available to you
  • register on Liverpool’s property pool system
  • make appropriate and realistic bids for properties
  • understand the facilities in the local area and to research the area in which you would choose to move
  • prepare for the transition to independence and permanent housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I have to share a room with other families?

No.  Each family is allocated a fully self-contained flat with a kitchen and bathroom.

Can I have visitors?

Yes, but we ask that they provide identification the first time they visit.  You are responsible for their behaviour.  We may restrict visitors for safety reasons to protect you or others.

Can I have overnight visitors?

No, unfortunately we are unable to allow this.

Do I have to pay rent?

Yes you will need to pay rent and a service charge for the heating, lighting and water you use.

If you are entitled to housing benefit, your support worker will help you make a claim which should cover your full rent, however you will still need to pay the service charge yourself.

Are there any rules?

We have house rules to ensure that everyone can live together safely and peacefully.  You will be given a copy of the house rules when you arrive and we will help you to understand them.

How long can I stay?

We aim to support you to move on to permanent accommodation within 10 weeks.  However this may take longer for a variety of reasons. You can remain in the project until you find accommodation providing you are keeping to the rules, paying rent and working with Housing Options and your support worker to identify suitable accommodation.
