Octavia Court

Octavia Hill (1838 – 1912) fought for decent living conditions for poor communities in London, through the 1880s, concerned that rich Londoners had more access to green space than poor Londoners. She believed that good environments make better people and her most enduring legacy was the provision of safe, comfortable homes for more than 3,000 people in Victorian London.

She was a pioneer of modern social care who introduced the concept of joined-up services long before it became a fashionable political policy and she was also – due to her belief in the importance of green spaces – a key figure in the foundation of the National Trust.

SHAP’s Octavia Court is named after her.

The staff team consists of the Scheme Manager and two Project Workers.

Octavia Court consists of 17 self-contained one bedroom flats for young homeless men and women aged 16-24 who are unable to live at home for any reason, or who have become homeless. This can include:

  • care leavers
  • young people with offending behaviour
  • young people who are experiencing mental ill-health
  • young single parents needing accommodation for themselves and their child(ren).

People currently stay for up to 9 months, while they work with us to assess their needs and we support them to become independent.

There is an office on site, which is staffed by Project Workers 7 days a week and then covered by an on-site concierge service:

  • Monday to Friday Project Worker office hours: 08:00-17:00
  • Monday to Friday Security / Concierge hours: 16:30-08:30

Tenants requiring advice, information or support can call in at anytime on any day of the week between 8am and 6pm to speak to staff

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay rent ?

If you are unemployed or on a low income, your rent can be paid by the local authority (Housing Benefit), if you meet the criteria for payment.

Staff will help you to make a claim and support you in ensuring that you submit the paperwork needed should your circumstances change.

Can I let people stay with me at my flat overnight ?

Tenants of Octavia Court can have visitors during the day and occasionally overnight (both you and your guests are expected to respect those living near to the scheme and not play music too loudly or make other noise late at night or early in the morning).

What kind of help will be available for me ?

When you move in to Octavia Court, you will be allocated a key-worker who will hold regular support sessions with you, helping you to create a support plan identifying the things that are important to you and the actions you need to take to help you secure more permanent housing.

Can I bring my pet with me ?

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to have any pets at Octavia Court.
